People ask us this more than any other question, and the honest answer is that there is no single best time — only the season that matches the trip you want. Coorg in the monsoon and Coorg in the winter are close to being two different destinations.
October to February: the easy answer
If you want the version of Coorg you have seen in photographs — clear mornings, mist sitting in the valleys, hills visible all the way to the horizon — come between October and February. The rain has finished, the hills are still green from it, and the air is cool enough to want a jacket in the early morning and after sunset.
This is also when the region is busiest. Weekends, long weekends and the stretch around New Year fill up well in advance. If your dates are fixed and they fall in this window, book earlier than feels necessary.
March to May: quieter, warmer, and in bloom
The months before the monsoon are warmer during the day but still pleasant in the hills, and considerably calmer than the winter peak. This is when the coffee blossom happens — the estates turn white for a few days after the first pre-monsoon showers, and the smell carries for miles. It is short, it is impossible to schedule precisely, and it is worth seeing.
Come in this window if you would rather have the viewpoints to yourself than have guaranteed clear weather.
June to September: the monsoon
Coorg receives serious rain. Not drizzle — days of it, heavy enough to close off some trekking routes and turn the waterfalls into something genuinely loud. The hills are at their most saturated green, the mist sits low all day, and the region is at its emptiest.
Plenty of people consider this the best time to come, and we understand why. Just come with the right expectations: this is a season for reading by a window, long lunches and short drives, not for packed itineraries. We wrote a separate guide to the monsoon if that is the trip you are considering.
